Hours of Operation:

Classes meet Monday through Thursday for a half day either in the morning or afternoon.


Ages Served:

at least 3 years old (by August 31) thru age 5


Eligibility Guidelines:

  • The family must live within the boundaries of Smoky Valley USD 400, McPherson USD 418, Canton/Galva USD 419, Moundridge USD 423, or Inman USD 448
  • Must meet federal guidelines
  • The child must be at least three (3) years old by August 31

Procedure to Enroll or Access Services:

To enroll, you must provide a copy of your child's birth certificate, immunization records, social security card, and medical card. Proof of family income is also needed to meet eligibility requirements.

Applications are accepted throughout the school year. If no opening exists, the new student's name will be placed on a waiting list. As openings occur, new students may begin at any time during the school year.



Children are required to have a physical exam and up to date immunizations upon enrollment in Head Start. Children without insurance or a medical card will receive these health services free of charge.

Children succeed in Head Start by participating in activities which are developmentally appropriate for the individual child.

Children attend either morning or afternoon classes in McPherson. Classes are held Monday through Thursday during the school year.

Children may be eligible for free busing to and from Head Start.

Children who attend the morning session receive breakfast and lunch. Afternoon children receive lunch and a snack. There is no charge for these meals or snack.

Parents have the opportunity to serve on committees, attend meetings and help make decisions regarding the Head Start program. Parents are encouraged to serve as classroom volunteers whenever possible, and also to accompany the class on field trips throughout the year.
